PEI sends three teams to Eastern Elite Volleyball
Championship
Three teams played
in Moncton over two days for the Eastern Elite Volleyball
Championship, featuring all four Atlantic provinces
in three divisions.
PEI's 18 U men 's team was coached by Krista Walsh
and Darren Dawson who finished 4th overall. They
battled on Friday to a 1/3 record with two of the
three matches going to the fifth set to decide a
winner. On Saturday, again the team played hard
losing both the semi and the bronze medal in the
fifth set and only eight players. The team members
were Jeff Duggan, Brandon Boyce, Dylan Ellsoworth,
Andrew Woodside, Chris Richard, Mike MacKinnon,
Matt MacKinnon, and Tyler Bernard. Mike MacKinnon
was named to the all star team.
The 16 U men 's
team had only seven players, Greg MacCormack, Trevor
Luttrell, Nathan Waite, Steven Feng, Marc Arsenault,
Alec Parise, and Patrick Davis who were coached
by Alan Clark and Ben MacAdam. They finished fifth
of seven with a 2-6 overall record for the weekend
and many close matched.

The 17 U women
came home as Tier 3 winners with a 3-7 record. In
pool play they were 1-5 and won the Tier three semis
and finals 2-0 over teams from Newfoundland. They
were lead by coaches, Morley Foy and Erin Kinsman.
The team members were Ellen Beck, Kate Kinsman,
Danielle MacLeod, Sydney Foy, Hannah Dawson, Kelly
Campbell, Becky Doucette, Meghan Graham, Sam Sweet,
Alana LeClair and Janelle Hardy. Doucette was named
to the all star team.
VPEI would like to thank all the players and coaches
for their hard work over the many weeks.
Beach
Volleyball Test Event....PERFECT!
Was it the new
facilities, or the weather, or maybe the excellent
organization? The first beach volleyball event in
Summerside over the weekend was near perfect.
The finals on Sunday featured three Islanders, Cherie
Campbell originally from Kensington along with her
partner Jen Waugh from Fredericton, battled the
PEI Canada Games team of Lindsey Theuerkauf from
Cornwall and Alana Murphy from Montague. The senior
team of Campbell and Waugh prevailed for another
title in beach volleyball, now over their 20th tournament
win in the Maritimes since joining forces.
The main purpose of the event was to work out any
wrinkles that could come up duruing the games but
everything ran very smooth all weekend long. Peter
Bolo, event coordinator had this comment, "
What a fantastic weekend for our test event. Our
beach organizing committee did a fantastic job,
got lots of ideas for improvements, and are to be
commended for all the time and effort they have
put in to this point and time. They are an incredible
group of people. Thanks also go to all our volunteers
who came out and worked hard all weekend to train
for the Canada Games event which will be here in
less than 4 weeks. Your hard work helped make the
tournament a great success."
The tournament had great weather on Saturday with
the overcast skies that seemed ready to open up
and pour at any moment but never did. Eight teams
played cross pools with the top two teams advancing
to the finals. The three Canada Games team advanced
along with Campbell /Waugh. The PEI Canada Games
team advanced to the semis with a 3 and one record
Saturday and played their best match on Sunday in
the semi’s vs. the Nova Scotia Canada Games
team winning 21 and 21. Campbell and Waugh earned
their way to the semis with a win over the NB Canada
Games team.
“The organizing committee and volunteers were
amazing all weekend and allowed us as coaches to
come out and just coach,” commented Lynn Boudreau
PEI Canada Games coach. “ Peter Bolo was the
right person to head up this event and along with
all those giving their time on the committee, I
think the beach volleyball will be the place to
be in week one.
The next event for Team PEI is the Cavendish Beach
Volleyball Tournament this weekend and then the
Maritime Open held at Parlee Beach in NB the weekend
before Canada Games..
The Kensington
Crusaders U16 girls compete at Canada East Open
The Crusaders volleyball team
had a successful weekend at the Eastern Canadian
championships finishing 15th out of the 40 teams
in their division.
The Crusaders had an incredible
first day, going 3-0 and finishing first in their
pool. Kensington opened their tournament play with
a very impressive 25-16, 25-17 victory over the
Northumberland Breakers from Cobourg, Ontario. They
followed that with a tough 26-24, 25-16 win over
the West Hants Wizards from Ellershouse, Nova Scotia.
Their third match of the day saw Kensington fight
back to defeat a very good Kent Nord Extreme team
from Richibucto, NB 16-25, 25-23, 15-11.
With three wins on Friday, Kensington
advanced to the top tier on Saturday. This meant
a new pool with three of the top teams in the tournament.
The Crusaders first match was a 25-7, 25-15 defeat
at the hands of the Cape Breton Attackers. Their
second match saw lose a hard fought 25-20, 25-15
decision to the Moncton Bleu et Or. The final match
of the day saw Kensington play the eventual bronze
medalists, the Dragons CSA from LaSalle, Quebec,
losing 25-19, 25-15.
Sunday morning, Kensington faced
a very good Cylones team from Lachenaie, Quebec
in the tier 2 quarter-finals, losing a very well
played match 25-17, 25-14.

Redd
Mudd U15 girls compete at Canada East Open in NB!
With a team of 10, 4 at the
U14 age, Redd Mudd U15 girls coached by Morley and
Gina Foy had a successful experience at this years
Eastern Canadians. 3 days in the early pool is no
easy task for anyone, let alone a group of 13-15
year old girls, but this team rose to the challenge
and competed with the best!
Day 1 saw lots of success with
a strong win against Ottawa and one of Quebecs many
teams, and a loss against another Quebec team. Happily
this meant nothing lower than a tier 2 finish. Day
2 was a bit of a downer, as the first team Mudd
met, Maverick Ambush from Ottawa, was the strongest
team in this division, and actually went on to win
tier 1. There were some long rallies in this match
however, and the girls felt their play was strong!
The day continued with another couple of losses
both to Quebec teams. It was a day of defeat on
the court, but the girls played well and easily
managed to kept their spirits high because they
knew they did their best. With scores in the second
sets reaching 21-25 and 24-26, heads were up and
confidence continued. The third day began with tier
2 quarter finals, and yet another team from Quebec.
This was, by far, the closest game in three days,
and Redd Mudd edged the win in two sets 25-22 and
29-27. Anna McCarvill had a beautiful setting day
which allowed Sydney Foy to execute many powerful
hits from all over the court. Kelly Campbell had
some strong, timely back court hits, and Hannah
Dawson earned her share of points from serving.
All four of these girls made some very impressive
blocks against some very tall players, and each
girl was able to walk away feeling they played their
personal best.
The semi final game was a bit
of a disappointment as Redd Mudd had to play The
Citadins from Quebec for a second time. Definitely
a strong team, Redd Mudd went down with style, never
giving up, always going for the dig, smiling and
showing a positive attitude, fighting for every
point available. The stronger team won, and Red
Mudd congratulated them with heads held high. Tier
2 Semi-finals. . . not too shabby! All 10 girls
saw plenty of play time. Other team members include
Alyson Smythe, Ellen Chapman, Danielle MacLeod,
Taylor Walsh, Jennifer Aubé, and Megan Llewellyn.
16U Charlottetown
Colonels compete at Canada East Open!

It was the Colonels first time
attending the nationals and we took a team of eight
players.
Friday began with a tough draw
and the girls were a bit overwhelmed by the Agrena
atmosphere. We lost all three matches but we were
close and all three teams went on to be a top ten
team, a winner of tier 2 (which we took to a third
game) and a winner of tier 3. We never felt overmatched
but our weaknesses (serve receive, defense, speed)
made the difference. It was very obvious to the
girls where our improvements need to be made.
On Saturday we won all our matches
and the girls were very excited about that. Sunday's
early match placed us against a smaller Quebec team
(we lost 3 of all 4 matches to Quebec teams) who
beat us on excellent serving and very fast defense.
The girls were disappointed but we had a good team
lunch and headed back to watch the final game of
Tier 1. Amazing volleyball, and a great way to end
the weekend.
Most valuable players for the
tournament were Maiqi Li for her hitting and Lauryn
Austin for her setting/serving. A great upcoming
player is 13 yr old Kiera Rigby who held her own
against older players (what an athlete!) All players
played a great deal and all came away with a greater
determination to improve their skills.
West
Prince Islanders at 16U Eastern Canadian Volleyball
Championships

The West Prince
Islanders 16U boys team capped off a great spring
season by attending the Eastern Canadian Championships
in Moncton May 8-10. A total of 116 boys and girls
teams from Ontario to Newfoundland participated
over the 3 days in 5 different division. Sixteen
teams competed for the 16U boys championship. On
day 1, the Islanders played 3 matches, finishing
the day with 1 win and 2 losses. They started off
against the much taller Ottawa Kangaroos and played
very well in game 1, losing 25-23, before losing
game 2 by a score of 25-10. They rebounded after
this loss with a great match against Impulsifs from
La Malbaie, Quebec losing 18-25 and 24-26. In their
final match of the day, the defeated valley waves
from Wolfville, NS 2-1 (25-14, 18-25, 15-9). The
days record put them into tier 2 form the second
day of competition.
Day two was a highlight
for the West Prince, as they played exceptionally
well, winning all 3 of their matches. They defeated
the Valley Skyhawks from Auburn, NS 2-0 (25-22,
25-14), Gravitron from Moncton, NB 2-0 (25-17, 25-12)
and finished with an exciting victory over the Cyclones
from Lachenaie, Quebec 2-0, (25-22, 25-21). This
match was the last to finished and players didn’t
get off the court until 10:30 at night. This was
to catch up with the Islanders in the playoffs the
next day.
After a short night,
the Islanders started off well, dominating their
quarter final match against the Dartmouth Lakers
from NS 25-7, 25-5. This put them into the semifinals
against the Sackville (NS) Sonics. “ You could
tell right from the start that the kids had nothing
left in the tank”, said coach Peter Bolo.
The first game was close with the Islanders having
a 24-22 lead before giving up 4 straight points
and losing the match 24-26 in game 2, the Islanders
could not get anything going and lost 17-25. Sackville
went on to win the final against the Castors from
Fredericton, NB.
All in all, it
was a great weekend for the Islanders. They were
one of the shortest teams but had terrific skill
and “played big”. They finished with
a record of 5 wins - 3 losses and all players had
a great time and improved greatly as volleyball
players. This will certainly help the Westisle Composite
High team next year as they look to defend their
PEISAA Provincial Championship.

serving and a balanced attack. The Crusaders pulled
away early in the first set, winning 25-14. The

Kensington won the last 10 points in a row to win
the second set going away 25-14. Team leaders for
