CHARLOTTETOWN ACES EDGE WEST PRINCE ISLANDERS IN VOLLEYBALL P.E.I. 17U PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Volleyball P.E.I. wrapped up it’s 17U boys spring volleyball season last week when it hosted it’s provincial championship at Colonel Gray High School in Charlottetown. Tournaments were hosted over the past 5 weeks by 5 different clubs leading into this championship. Play steadily improved each week to the point that the provincial title was truly up for grabs.

Six teams took part in the competition with the top 4 teams advancing to the playoff round. After the round robin, the standings were: Charlottetown Aces 5-0, Hampshire Heat #1 4-1, West Prince Islanders 3-2, and Heat #2, Summerside Slammers, and Montague Magic all finishing at 1-4 and tied for the fourth and final playoff spot. The tie breaking procedures had to come into play, and it went to the third step before it was decided that the Heat #2 would advance.

The playoff format was 1 game to 25 points with a team having to win by 2. Semifinal #1 saw the Charlottetown Aces defeat Heat #2 by a score of 25-18. Semi #2 was an incredible back and forth battle between Heat #1 and the Islanders. Neither team could pull away but with the score tied at 25-25, the Islanders got the next 2 points to win 27-25 and advance to the finals to play the Aces.

These teams had played many close matches over the course of the season and the final provided more of the same. Islander’s coach Adam Gallant stated, “I wondered if the guys would be able to get refocused after such an emotional and draining semifinal.” The Islanders responded to the challenge and took an early 15-12 lead. However , the Aces went on a run with some tough serving and key hits, took the lead, and did not look like they could be caught. However, the Islanders would not quit and went on a run of their own. “Brandy Hiltz and Connor Herget were killing the ball from the power position and did not back away despite being down on the scoreboard,” said Islander coach Allan Clark. “Our setter Kent Doucette did a super job running the offence  and libero Ben Perry had his best night of the spring to keep us in the match.” The teams were tied at 25 and the fans in the gym were cheering wildly on each point.  With the score 26-26 however, the Islanders made a service and serve reception error, losing the final 2 points, enabling the Aces to walk away with a 28-26 victory and the provincial crown. “I am very pleased with how our boys played,” said Aces coach Andrew MacDougald. “They all stepped up their game and were led by the fine play of Lee Li and Brayden White.  The spring season was a fantastic opportunity for players on all teams to develop their skills and everyone got a lot of playing time.” The bronze medal game saw Heat #1 defeat their club mates Heat #2 by a score of 25-21.

Players selected to the tournament all-star team were Lee Li (Aces), Kent Doucette (Islanders), Alex Orsauk (Heat #1), Andre Boudreau (Heat #2),Alex Desroches (Slammers), and Tristan Dawson (Magic).

Coaches from all 5 clubs agreed that this spring season bodes well for an exciting PEISAA high school league next fall.  Next stop....beach volleyball this summer !

WEST PRINCE ISLANDERS 17U BOYS EDGE HAMPSHIRE HEAT

The week 4 Volleyball P.E.I. 17U boys tournament finals came right down to the wire. The event was played at the Holland College gym in Charlottetown and was hosted by the Hurricanes men head volleyball coach Joe Ryan. The caliber of play is getting higher with each passing week, said Ryan. By the time provincials role around in 2 weeks, it will be very interesting to see the level of play and final results.

Six teams took part in the normal round robin action, with the top 2 teams advancing to the finals. The action was so close that a tie breaking procedure had to be used to determine positions 2 through 4. The West Prince Islanders finished in 1st place with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. Three teams finished with records of 3-2, and after going to the second tie -breaking procedure, the results were Hampshire Heat #1 finishing 2nd, Summerside Slammers 3rd, and Charlottetown Aces 4th. The Hampshire Heat #2 team finished 2-3 while the Montague Magic were 0-5.

In the final, the Islanders were looking to turn the tables after suffering a 1 point loss to the Heat #1 team. It was a back and forth battle and neither team would give an inch. The Heat made 3 or 4 incredible defensive plays to stay within striking distance and the score was tied at 18-18 as the ball was served by the Islanders just before the final buzzer sounded . In what was a long rally for the final and deciding point, the Islanders finally put it away with a strong rightside attack and a 19-18 victory. This was the 4th consecutive tournament win for the West Prince squad. I am really proud of our guys, said Islander coach Adam Gallant. We only had 6 guys available this week and some of them had to play in positions that they normally don't. What a great final and what a fantastic defensive effort the Heat put up. In the bronze medal game, the Aces beat Slammers 27-20.

The last regular season tournament will be hosted by the Summerside Slammers on Wednesday, April 24 at Three Oaks. This will be the last opportunity for teams to play and prepare for the provincial finals being hosted at Colonel Gray on May 1st.

West Prince Islanders Win VPEI 17U Tournament

ACan you dig it?... Oh yeah ! @Volleyball PEI 17U boys spring league got off to a great start this week. The league will run for 5 weeks, culminating in the provincial championship on May 1st in Charlottetown. Six teams from 4 different clubs took part at the 1st tournament hosted by the West Prince Islanders at Westisle Composite High. Clubs registered this spring include: defending provincial champion West Prince Islanders, coached by Allan Clark, Adam Gallant, and Peter Bolo; Summerside Slammers, coached by Joel Arsenault, Hampshire Heat, coached by Lynn Boudreau, and a newly formed club out of Montague, coached by Dr. Travis Murphy. The Andrew MacDougald coached Charlottetown Aces, who competed in the league last year, did not take part this week but hopefully will be ready to go by next weeks tournament.

The tournament was a round robin format, with the top 2 teams vying for the championship and 3rd and 4th place teams playing in the consolation. Games were 15 minutes in length and many of the matches were extremely close, going right down to the buzzer. Results after round robin play saw the Islanders#1 and Islanders #2 teams with identical 4-1 records, followed by Hampshire Heat #1 at 3-3, Montague at 2-3, and Hampshire #2 and Summerside at 1-4.

Both host Islanders teams met in the final, with Islanders 1 looking to exact some revenge for a close 22-19 loss at the hands of Islanders 2 in the first match of the evening. Things started off well for them as they jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead. However, the #2 team slowly clawed their way back and tied the score at 21-21 heading into the last minute. They continued to carry this momentum and scored the last 3 points of the match to win by a score of 24-21. In the consolation game, Hampshire 1 defeated Montague 29-15.

League coordinator Peter Bolo commented, AFor the first tournament of the season, the level of play was very good. It got better and better as the night went on and should provide for some great action over the next month. The idea of spring league is to get the kids playing. There are no cuts , small numbers on each team and little sitting on the bench. The players are usually tired after 3 hours of playing.@ He also commented on how great it was to see Montague in the league this year. ATravis also coaches the high school team there. He has done a terrific job with that program and this will improve even more with his guys playing spring league.@

The next tournament will take place next Wednesday, April 3rd at Montague High School. Play starts at 5:30 and goes till 8:30. Fans are always welcome to come out and catch some of the action.
