forward to the last two tournaments and provincials
on May 15th.”
The four

The Summerside

Tier 1 Women's Volleyball PEI tournament title for
the third straight time. They were able to repeat

a 3-3 record, just ahead of Red Mudd 2. Finishing
off the standings, were KISH in sixth and the West
Prince Islanders in seventh. Aside from the Suns

have seen a lot of changes in the in the overall

WEST
PRINCE ISLANDERS 17U BOYS EDGE HAMPSHIRE HEAT
The
week 4 Volleyball P.E.I. 17U boys tournament finals
came right down to the wire. The event was played
at the Holland College gym in Charlottetown and
was hosted by the Hurricanes men head volleyball
coach Joe Ryan. The caliber of play is getting higher
with each passing week, said Ryan. By the time provincials
role around in 2 weeks, it will be very interesting
to see the level of play and final results.
Six
teams took part in the normal round robin action,
with the top 2 teams advancing to the finals. The
action was so close that a tie breaking procedure
had to be used to determine positions 2 through
4. The West Prince Islanders finished in 1st place
with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. Three teams
finished with records of 3-2, and after going to
the second tie -breaking procedure, the results
were Hampshire Heat #1 finishing 2nd, Summerside
Slammers 3rd, and Charlottetown Aces 4th. The Hampshire
Heat #2 team finished 2-3 while the Montague Magic
were 0-5.
In the
final, the Islanders were looking to turn the tables
after suffering a 1 point loss to the Heat #1 team.
It was a back and forth battle and neither team
would give an inch. The Heat made 3 or 4 incredible
defensive plays to stay within striking distance
and the score was tied at 18-18 as the ball was
served by the Islanders just before the final buzzer
sounded . In what was a long rally for the final
and deciding point, the Islanders finally put it
away with a strong rightside attack and a 19-18
victory. This was the 4th consecutive tournament
win for the West Prince squad. I am really proud
of our guys, said Islander coach Adam Gallant. We
only had 6 guys available this week and some of
them had to play in positions that they normally
don't. What a great final and what a fantastic defensive
effort the Heat put up. In the bronze medal game,
the Aces beat Slammers 27-20.
The
last regular season tournament will be hosted by
the Summerside Slammers on Wednesday, April 24 at
Three Oaks. This will be the last opportunity for
teams to play and prepare for the provincial finals
being hosted at Colonel Gray on May 1st.

WEST
PRINCE ISLANDERS MAKE IT 3 IN A ROW
For
the third week in a row, the West Prince Islanders
took home the title in the Volleyball P.E.I. weekly
17U boys volleyball tournament. Seven teams took
part in the tournament that was hosted by the Hampshire
Heat at Bluefield High School. This was the largest
number of teams to take part so far so the format
was a round robin between all 7 teams with no playoffs.
Final
results after all games were played were: Islanders#2-
6-0,Islanders#1- 5-1, Charlottetown Aces- 4-2, Hampshire
Heat#1- 3-3, Summerside Slammers - 2-4, Montague
Magic- 1- 5, Hampshire Heat#2- 0-6. To demonstrate
how close the action was, the winning Islanders
2 squad won 2 of their games by 2 points or less
while the Islanders 2 team, who finished 2nd, lost
1 game by one point and won 3 games by 2 points
or less. Five other matches were decided by 5 points
or less. AThe athletes see spring league as an opportunity
to play and that is exactly what it is@, said Summerside
Slammers coach Joel Arsenault. AIt is evident that
the level of play has gotten better each week and
this is something that opposing coaches speak to
each other about. Our club is looking forward to
the second half of the season and to the VPEI championship
on May 1st.@
The
4th league tournament will take place at the Holland
College gymnasium on Wednesday, April 17 with action
beginning at 5:30. More great action will surely
be in store.

Summerside
Slammers win Volleyball P.E.I. 14U Boys tournament
For
a third straight week, the Summerside Slammers took
the Volleyball P.E.I. 14U Boys tournament. The three-team
event was held at East Wiltshire. The Slammers downed
West Prince Islanders 28-11 in the finals. Summerside
opened a early 10-2 lead and never looked back in
the finals.
It
was the first tournament for Red Mudd, based out
of East Wiltshire. Due to numbers, Summerside only
had one team participating in this week’s
event.
Julie
Wilting, coach of Red Mudd was very excited to have
her charges participating. “This gives our
your kids an opportunity to participate in a non-threatening
atmosphere. I can see a big improvement in the play
of my boys from the first game to the end of evening.
We are definitely looking forward to playing in
the remaining tournaments and the Volleyball P.E.I.
provincials in May”.
West
Prince advanced to the finals by nipping Red Mudd
32-14 in the semi-finals.
The
three teams played a double-round robin in timed
games lasting 12 minutes. After round-robin, both
Summerside and West Prince finished with 3-1 record.
Summerside was given the first-place nod after applying
the tie-breaking procedure. Red Mudd finished third
at 0-4.
The
fourth of six league tournaments is scheduled for
next Wednesday at Summerside.

Aylesford, Nova Scotia this weekend to play
in an 18U tournament with some of the top
clubs in their province.” In the consolation
match, Hampshire edged the Aces by a score
of 26-22.
When

is a great chance for players of all skill
levels to play and gain experience for the
coming school year. The play in the first
2 weeks has been very good.” Charlottetown
Aces coach Andrew MacDougald stated“It’s
great to see the players having a lot of
fun and displaying such a high level of

Summerside
Slammers Team One edged the West Prince
Islanders 20-17 to win the first Volleyball
P.E.I. 14U Boys tournament of the year.
Three teams participated in the event which
was held at Summerside Intermediate School
last Wednesday. West Prince Islanders are
the defending Volleyball P.E.I. 14U Provincial
Champions.
“It
was amazing to see how much the players
improved as the tournament went on” commented
official Darryl Gaudet.
The
three teams played a double-round robin
in timed games lasting 12 minutes. Although
there was only three teams, others are looking
at starting play this week. “It was nice
to get started” said Dale MacDougall, coach
of the Slammers. “The spring season is so
important to the development of our program.
It allows us to get young players involved
in the sport and to get them ready for the
fall P.E.I.S.A.A. season”
The

hands on numerous occasions. West Prince
advanced to the finals by getting by Summerside

Prince Islanders Win VPEI 17U Tournament
ACan you dig it?... Oh yeah ! @Volleyball
PEI 17U boys spring league got off to a
great start this week. The league will run
for 5 weeks, culminating in the provincial
championship on May 1st in Charlottetown.
Six teams from 4 different clubs took part
at the 1st tournament hosted by the West
Prince Islanders at Westisle Composite High.
Clubs registered this spring include: defending
provincial champion West Prince Islanders,
coached by Allan Clark, Adam Gallant, and
Peter Bolo; Summerside Slammers, coached
by Joel Arsenault, Hampshire Heat, coached
by Lynn Boudreau, and a newly formed club
out of Montague, coached by Dr. Travis Murphy.
The Andrew MacDougald coached Charlottetown
Aces, who competed in the league last year,
did not take part this week but hopefully
will be ready to go by next weeks tournament.
The tournament was a round robin format,
with the top 2 teams vying for the championship
and 3rd and 4th place teams playing in the
consolation. Games were 15 minutes in length
and many of the matches were extremely close,
going right down to the buzzer. Results
after round robin play saw the Islanders#1
and Islanders #2 teams with identical 4-1
records, followed by Hampshire Heat #1 at
3-3, Montague at 2-3, and Hampshire #2 and
Summerside at 1-4.
Both host Islanders teams met in the final,
with Islanders 1 looking to exact some revenge
for a close 22-19 loss at the hands of Islanders
2 in the first match of the evening. Things
started off well for them as they jumped
out to a quick 9-2 lead. However, the #2
team slowly clawed their way back and tied
the score at 21-21 heading into the last
minute. They continued to carry this momentum
and scored the last 3 points of the match
to win by a score of 24-21. In the consolation
game, Hampshire 1 defeated Montague 29-15.
League coordinator Peter Bolo commented,
AFor the first tournament of the season,
the level of play was very good. It got
better and better as the night went on and
should provide for some great action over
the next month. The idea of spring league
is to get the kids playing. There are no
cuts , small numbers on each team and little
sitting on the bench. The players are usually
tired after 3 hours of playing.@ He also
commented on how great it was to see Montague
in the league this year. ATravis also coaches
the high school team there. He has done
a terrific job with that program and this
will improve even more with his guys playing
spring league.@
The next tournament will take place next
Wednesday, April 3rd at Montague High School.
Play starts at 5:30 and goes till 8:30.
Fans are always welcome to come out and
catch some of the action.
